What is eduroam?
Global access to WIFI: Eduroam is a global collaboration that gives students, researchers and staff access to use the WIFI infrastructure in several hundred locations in Denmark, the Faroe Islands and Greenland and thousands of places in the rest of the world. DeiC is NRO, National Roaming Operator for eduroam in Denmark, the Faroe Islands and Greenland.
Automatically on the internet: When a user has set up eduroam for the first time on his mobile, tablet or PC, access to the internet will automatically be gained in the future when the device is in a place that is covered by eduroam.
When is eduroam used?
Eduroam is used when your institution wants to offer all your users easy access to the internet everywhere covered by eduroam.
Who can use eduroam?
Users: Eduroam can be used by researchers, staff and students.
Institutions: Users can get online anywhere with eduroam coverage and the need to provide guest access to all visitors from educational institutions around the world disappears.
In doubt: If you are in doubt whether you as a user can use eduroam then contact your institution. If your institution is in doubt about whether it can offer eduroam, contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
What does it take to use eduroam?
Users: The user must have a PC, tablet or mobile phone that offers WIFI connection. The equipment must have an operating system installed that supports encryption and certificates and the user's home institution must have given the specific user access to use eduroam. Eduroam installation profiles have been developed for almost all types of equipment. The installation is done via the eduroam Configuration Assistant Tool, or directly from your equipment's app store.
Identity providers: Institutions wishing to make eduroam available to their staff and students must be affiliated with the research and education sector. The institution must have an LDAP-compatible user database, which can exchange user information via RADIUS and have a fixed IP address. Read more here (Danish only).
Service providers: At the same time as the institution's users gain access to eduroam, it is expected that the institution itself makes eduroam access available at its own addresses.
What about legal issues, security and personal data?
Access security: User password for eduroam is encrypted. The home institution at eduroam is responsible for the data security of their user authorization and general user management.
Backup: The central infrastructure in eduroam is backed up. The eduroam service itself can be reestablished from backup, but data on individual transactions will not. The home institution is responsible for the backup and reestablishment of local user databases.
No data processor agreement: Connection, location data, technical data and contact information will be collected from the local eduroam managers. In connection with the users' login to eduroam, the IP address and MAC address will be logged at the place where the user connects, while the identity of the user will be logged at the home institution. In the Radius hierarchy the route between these endpoints, the IP address and MAC address and the names of the institutions involved are logged.
This data is collected by the institutions involved as independent data controllers, and a data processor agreement is therefore not relevant.
Terms: Eduroam may only be used for lawful use, including that the users have at their disposal and respect the rights to the data that the users transfer. How much does it cost to use eduroam?
Free for users: Eduroam is free for end users.
Included for institutions on the Research Network: Eduroam access is included in the fee for network connection to the Research Network.
Free to offer access to your infrastructure: Institutions that want to offer access to its WIFI infrastructure as Service Providers on eduroam can do this for free.
Small payment for other institutions: Other institutions that will offer their users eduroam and are not connected The research network pays 0.01 per mille annually of the institution's turnover (understood as the sum of the ordinary operating expenses in the latest available accounts) at least DKK 1.000 pr year.
Where do I get support?
Local support: If you need support, you can contact eduroam support at the institution to which you belong or the institution to which you are physically located. Go to the department's eduroam page or contact the local IT support.
